Ghaziabad Intro |
The excavation work and archeological research have indicated that a portion of present Ghaziabad was part of a thriving civilization way back in 2500 BC. Evidences have also proved its association with Samundra Gupta, the famous emperor of the Gupta dynasty, in later part of its history. Further down in the timeline of Ghaziabad, we find Taimur visiting the region and despoiling the wealth that it had preserved so far. When India came under the dominion of the Mughal emperors, the area near Loni became a favorable site for royal hunting and pleasure trips.
It was Ghazi-ud-din, a minister of the royal court of the Mughal Emperors, who laid the foundation of the modern city of Ghaziabad in 1740 under the name of Ghaziuddinnagar. A sarai was built, which was spacious enough to house as many as 120 rooms.
The city was fortified with a boundary wall surrounding it from all four sides. Accessibility to the city was possible only through the four huge doors known as Dasna Gate, Delhi Gate, Sihani Gate and Shahi Gate. The four gates can still be seen, though it is hard to find the boundary wall except for its few remaining portions. Moreover, Shahi Gate was renamed as Jawahar Gater after independence.
The banks of river Hindon that passes through Ghaziabad have witnessed several wars during the early British era. The most famous battle fought here was between the freedom fighters and the royal army of the British East India Company during the first independence movement of 1857. Though the freedom fighters had to succumb to the mighty power of the colonial rulers, the glory of Ghaziabad reached its acme with the martyrdom achieved by many nationalists. Soon the area was connected to other parts of the country, such as Aligarh and Delhi through railway tracks and it came to be known as Ghaziabad, rather than its original name as Ghaziuddinnagar.
At the time of independence, Ghaziabad was merely a tehsil in the district of Meerut. It was made a separate district in 1976, and from then onwards it started to move forward at colossal speed to achieve new landmarks in almost every sectors. The early part of the city's development course saw its emergence as a heavily industrialized city. Later, the exceptional growth of the city in providing modern facilities made it a better option than Delhi and other NCRs for home seekers and real estate investors. Today the area comprising the whole of Ghaziabad district is brimming with unbound possibilities of industrial and residential development, which promise assured and much inflated return to investors and property developers. |
